TONGA, March 20th, 2024 – MORDI Tonga proudly unveiled its Floriculture Initiative at the MORDI Tonga HQ in Tonga. The inauguration ceremony was graced by the esteemed presence of HM Queen Nanasipau’u Tuku’aho, Queen of Tonga, who presided over the event alongside dignitaries, distinguished guests, and community members.
In her address, the Chairlady of the Board for MORDI Tonga Dr. Seu’ula Johansson FUA expressed to the audience her enthusiasm, stating, “I stand before you today with immense pride and excitement as we gather to launch a groundbreaking initiative that embodies the essence of empowerment and sustainability.” She further emphasized the transformative impact of the initiative on rural women, providing them with tools and pathways for sustainable economic livelihoods.
Mr. Tevita TUKIA, the Agricultural Development Coordinator of MORDI Tonga, highlighted the significant progress made, stating, “Today there are 3,000 orchids of 7 varieties with 45 different colors, all of which were collections shared from South Sea Orchids… Currently, the nursery holds 7,000 anthuriums of 17 different varieties of colors.” He projected future growth, indicating plans to expand the orchid and anthurium production significantly.
Aileen BURNESS, founder of South Sea Orchids, reflected on the journey of resilience and determination, stating, “Our journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, the strength of community, and the boundless potential that lies within each and every one of us.” She highlighted the importance of collaboration and unity in advancing the floriculture industry, especially for women in the Pacific.
Candra SAMEKTO, the Country Director for the Pacific Island Countries, Asia-Pacific division at IFAD, emphasized IFAD’s commitment to empowering rural communities and fostering sustainable development across the Pacific Islands. He highlighted the Tonga Rural Innovation Project as a successful collaboration between IFAD and MORDI Tonga Trust, showcasing the impactful outcomes of such partnerships.
The Queen officially opened the initiative by viewing the three new nurseries housing the orchid and anthurium collections that the MORDI Tonga staff have diligently been multiplying over the years. HM Queen Nanasipau’u was accompanied by Mr. Tevita TUKIA, Mrs. Aileen BURNESS and her grandson Mr. Stephen HENRY further explaining the work involved in caring for the plants.
Her Majesty Queen Nanasipau’u Tuku’aho’s recent visit to MORDI Tonga marks her second trip to the organization, highlighting the enduring support of both Her Majesty and His Majesty King Tupou VI towards rural development throughout the island groups. Their Majesties have long championed a philosophy founded by the Thai King of Sufficiency Economy, resonating deeply with Tongan cultural values and traditional ways of life. This shared vision has led to a close partnership between the royal family and MORDI Tonga, fostering stronger ties within communities and facilitating access to land for rural farmers through royal estates. In addition to their commitment to rural development, Her Majesty the Queen has been a vocal advocate for women’s empowerment, encouraging pathways to success and independence for women across Tonga.
The Floriculture Initiative not only represents a significant step towards economic empowerment for rural women but also underscores the importance of collaboration, resilience, and sustainable development in Tonga and the wider Pacific region.
