17 Dec Strengthening Partnerships from the Ground Up: U.S. Delegation Visit to MORDI Tonga
28 October 2024 – Last week, MORDI Tonga was pleased to welcome a United States delegation led by Mr. Paul Grove, accompanied by Mr. Paul Rademacher, Senior Appropriations Advisor from the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Legislative Affairs; Ms. Betty Chung, USAID Deputy Mission Director for the Pacific Islands and Mongolia; and Mrs. Heather Coble, Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Nuku’alofa.

The visit provided an important opportunity for the delegation to engage directly with the MORDI Tonga team and gain firsthand insight into how U.S. funding is supporting community-based initiatives and creating tangible, positive impacts in the communities we work with across Tonga. Discussions focused on how development assistance translates into resilience on the ground—strengthening livelihoods, improving food security, and supporting communities to better withstand the growing pressures of climate change and economic vulnerability.

While the visit was short, it carried significant meaning. High-level engagements such as this signal more than oversight; they demonstrate trust, accountability, and a shared commitment to people-centred development. For MORDI Tonga, it was an opportunity to showcase the value of long-term partnerships that prioritizes local leadership, indigenous knowledge, and community-driven solutions.

At a national and regional level, visits like these reaffirm Tonga’s importance within the broader Pacific development landscape. They underscore the United States’ continued interest in partnering with Pacific Island countries in ways that are responsive to local contexts and grounded in real community needs. In a region facing increasing climate risks and development challenges, such engagement strengthens collective efforts toward sustainable and resilient futures.

For Tonga specifically, these interactions help deepen bilateral relationships by moving beyond policy discussions to practical, on-the-ground realities. They highlight how international partnerships can be strengthened “from the ground up,” ensuring that development cooperation delivers meaningful outcomes for rural and vulnerable communities.

MORDI Tonga remains committed to building resilience where it matters most—within communities—and to working alongside partners like the United States to ensure development investments continue to make a lasting difference for Tonga and the wider Pacific region. 🌿🌺
