17 Dec Australian supported floriculture project continues to bloom.
June 20th, 2025 – The Floriculture Project in Tonga, launched last year with significant backing from the Australian Government, has reached a new milestone in its mission to revitalize and strengthen the country’s floriculture sector. Led by MORDI Tonga, the initiative has been working closely with the Tonga Floriculture Association (TFA), providing ongoing support through training, resources, and infrastructure development.
Yesterday, members of the TFA gathered for a special handover ceremony marking the latest phase of the project. Each participant received essential gardening tools, equipment, and a share of anthuriums and orchids—key varieties for both local use and potential export. The ceremony also served as an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the association members, who were presented with certificates recognizing their participation in the programme.

Deputy High Commissioner of Australia, Erin Gleeson, officiated the event as guest of honor. In her remarks, she highlighted the pivotal role women play in community development and the significance of empowering them through initiatives such as this.
“We really see that it’s women who hold communities together,” said Ms Gleeson. “Whatever we can do to make your life easier, to make your life better – Australia is here to support you.”

She also praised the dedication and passion of the women involved, encouraging them to share their skills and knowledge with others. “I’m excited by the work that this programme is doing,” she said. “So that you can go on to teach others—giving them not only knowledge and resources, but also inspiring them with your love for your communities and for nature. That’s what enables growth and transformation.”
The project continues to lay a strong foundation for a more vibrant, resilient floriculture sector in Tonga, with community empowerment and sustainability at its heart.
